A philosophy of comprehensive care of the scholar athlete has been advocated at The Hughston Clinic since Dr. Jack Hughston founded the Clinic in 1949. In 1968, at the request
of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, the Clinic began training residents by offering
a sports medicine rotation. A few years later, a year-long fellowship in sports medicine was established at the Clinic. These educational programs have continued, and past residents
and fellows make up the Hughston Society, a cadre of orthopedic surgeons and primary care physicians who were trained in the Hughston Philosophy.
The Hughston Society includes orthopedic surgeons and physicians from other specialties, from the United States and abroad. The group is bound by a genuine concern for athletes and
a desire to help them return to competition injury free in the shortest amount of time.
