ARTICLE III: MEMBERSHIP
Section 1: Basis for Membership
Membership is limited to those orthopaedic surgeons who have spent significant time in training at the Hughston Orthopaedic
Clinic and those non-orthopaedists who have supported in some significant way the teachings of Jack C. Hughston, MD
Section 2: Classes of Membership
a. Active
Active members shall be former orthopaedic or sports medicine residents and orthopaedic or sports medicine fellows
elected to membership.
b. Associate
Associate members shall be orthopaedic physicians who are not eligible for active membership elected by vote of the active
membership.
c. Advisory
Advisory members shall be non-orthopaedic physicians elected by vote of the active membership to serve in an advisory capacity.
d. Affiliate
Affiliate members shall be non‑medical members elected by vote of the active membership.
e. Sustaining
After reaching the age of 70, active, associate, advisory and affiliate members shall be allowed to apply for a change to
sustaining membership. This change is voluntary.
f. Honorary
Honorary membership is open to those individuals not eligible in any other membership class who have rendered special
service to the society. Honorary membership shall be conferred by a special vote of the active members.
Section 3: Privileges of Membership
a. Active members shall have the right to attend meetings, vote, and hold office.
b. Associate, advisory, affiliate, sustaining, and honorary members shall have the right to attend meetings but shall not vote or
hold office.
Section 4: Admission to Membership
a. Eligibility
1. Orthopaedic residents, orthopaedic fellows, primary care fellows, and practicing orthopaedists who have spent at least
a 6 month period of training at the Hughston Orthopaedic Clinic.
2. Those eligible for active membership are expected to have presented a paper at a Hughston Society meeting.
Presentation at the same meeting during which the member is inducted will satisfy this requirement.
3. Orthopaedic residents, orthopaedic fellows, primary care fellows, and practicing orthopaedists who have spent less than six
weeks of formal training at the Hughston Orthopaedic Clinic are eligible for associate membership.
b. Application for Membership
1. Candidates for active and associate membership shall become eligible upon completion of their training at the
Hughston Orthopaedic Clinic.
2. Each candidate for active or associate membership must be sponsored by one current staff member of the Hughston
Orthopaedic Clinic and by oneother current active member of the Hughston Society. Candidates are responsible for finding
their sponsors and communicating their names to the membership committee at the time of application.
3. Eligible candidates for active and associate membership must notify the Membership Committee in writing that they wish their
applications considered at the next regular meeting.
4. Candidates for advisory or affiliate membership must be proposed by an active member. These names must be submitted in
writing to the membership committee prior to the regular meeting. Each active member may propose no more than one
advisory or affiliate member each year.
5. Members wishing to change to sustaining membership must notify the Membership Committee in writing prior to the
regular meeting.
6. The Membership Committee shall consider all candidates prior to the first business session of the regular meeting and
will determine by a three fourths vote those to be recommended for membership.
c. Election by Membership
1. Candidates recommended by the Membership Committee must be elected to membership by a three fourths vote of
those active members present at the regular meeting.
2. Candidates not recommended by the Membership Committee, and the reasons therefore, shall also be reported to the
active membership. The action of the Membership Committee may be overruled by a three-fourths vote of the active members
present at the regular meeting.
3. The newly elected active members must be present for their induction at the regular meeting of the society.
4. HUGHSTON RULE:
Doctor Hughston shall have the privilege to appoint any person membership status in any category.
Section 5: Requirements for Maintaining Membership
a. Active members must:
1. pay fully all annual dues and assessments in accordance with these bylaws.
2. attend the regular meeting at least once every two meetings, unless excused by the Executive Committee.
3. maintain an active curriculum vitae with the executive director.
4. continue to present a paper to the Hughston Society meeting at least every 6 years.
b. Associate, advisory, and affiliate members must pay fully all annual dues and assessments in accordance with these bylaws.
Section 6: Removal - Resignation - Inactive Membership
a. The following constitute just cause for removal from membership:
1. Failure to comply with these bylaws.
2. Conduct which is detrimental to the Society.
3. Unethical conduct in violation of the Code of Professional Responsibility of the American College of Surgeons or the
American Medical Association.
b. A member may be removed by unanimous vote of the Executive Committee.
c. A member in good standing may resign at any time upon written notification to the Executive Director.
d. Any member who fails to pay dues or assessments in the amount and within the time limit specified in Article IV hereof will
be moved into an inactive membership status and will no longer enjoy the privileges of membership.
Section 7: Reinstatement
a. A member who has been removed from membership may only be reinstated by unanimous vote of the membership present
at the regular meeting.
b. Any member who has resigned while in good standing may be reinstated upon written request to the Executive Director
and by a three-fourths vote of the Executive Committee.
c. An inactive member may be reinstated to their former membership category by the payment of all appropriate past and
current dues and assessments, including those dues that apply to the period during which they were an inactive member.
